A woman gets a mysterious serum in the mail. And it's strangely similar to the research her scientist brother has been conducting.
Claudia Fischer discovers a mysterious package on her doorstep one day. When she enlists her scientist brother to determine its contents they discover the liquid inside bears a resemblance to the research he’s been conducting for the past 10 years.
Soon they’re faced with a decision about what to do with their discovery — and their decision may change the future of the world.
This short sci-fi drama may have mysterious cures and serums, but at heart it’s really about a family struggling with the realities of cancer — about trying to live in the face of a devastating diagnosis and confront fears about losing our loved ones.
As a result, writer-director Michael Urbanski’s script is unusually heartfelt for a film in the genre and is attentive to the anxieties and tensions that come up with families have to work together to deal with a loved one’s illness.
The film is anchored by a performance by character actress Julie McNiven, know for her recurring roles in shows like “Mad Men,” “Supernatural” and “Stargate: Universe.” She captures the nuances of caring for someone with a terminal illness, struggling with their own emotions while trying to maintain a semblance of strength for the people around them.
“Injection” is fascinating because it essentially looks at how advances in science and technology affect ordinary human beings — how most people simply want to help themselves and the people they love. The film keeps its eyes firmly on this intimate human scale, grounding its drama in a situation that many sadly grapple with in real life. But what plays out still shows that the smallest decisions can add up to change the course of history.
