Today’s the Day ft. Danny DeVito

By Daniel Cloud Campos | Comedy
A dance intern tries to get permission to attend the big audition.

Cloud Walker has come to Hollywood all the way from Colorado and dreams of becoming a dancer, but he doesn’t quite have the confidence in himself to go after his dream.

But when he’s asked to deliver a file to the main boss, he decides to grab the opportunity in front of him and put himself forward — only to be confronted with one tough cookie, in the form of Danny Devito.

Writer-director Daniel Cloud Campos, with the aid of acclaimed cinematographer Morgan Susser and producers Tova Dann and Spencer Susser, has fashioned a charming short musical with plenty of verve, charm and panache. Its story is simple and clear, but it’s told with energy and brio, capturing the hopes and yearning of its main character with flair.

Jazzlike in pacing and rhythm and captured in energetic camerawork, the film is simply a delight for the eyes and ears, capturing the sheer joy of dance and performance. Campos takes on the lead role, and the film is a terrific showcase for his engaging dance and performance talent. But the short also works on the level of cinematic craft, with top-notch acting, cinematography, editing, musical scoring and lighting.

Campos initially started as a YouTube sensation, earning a huge audience for his videos, but “Today’s the Day” is a genuinely amiable and engaging piece of filmmaking that earns its warmheartedness honestly, through thoughtful craft, hard work and sincerity. The film is perhaps a throwback to the golden age of Hollywood, but reinvented in a way that reminds audiences that good old-fashioned entertainment never goes out of style.
