The Sea Is Blue
A stop-motion fable explains how the ocean got its color.
Writer and director Vincent Peone offers a poetic, colorful myth of how the ocean got its color, in a lovely screen odyssey for all ages.
A little girl is on a fishing trip, when she falls into the water and sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor.
From there, she embarks on a mythological underwater journey that not only explains the natural world, but offers a meditation on loss, fear, acceptance and resilience.
Rendered in gorgeous, well-crafted claymation, the movie is gentle in tone and deeply imaginative in its visuals. A whimsical score engages viewers, but the storytelling works on a deeper, metaphorical level, lingering long after viewing.
The director wrote the short as a way to comfort himself while his sister lay in a coma in a hospital. Wondering what was going on in her mind, the film offers both recognition of the difficult emotions we all face, as well as hope that we can rise above to new beginnings.
Emotionally resonant and optimistic, “The Sea Is Blue” will uplift the spirit, even as it plunges into the depths of deeply human fears.
