Gints Zilbalodis created this sophisticated piece of visual storytelling about a cat who wakes up surrounded by water and must learn to survive.
“It started as vague ideas of a cat, ocean and overcoming fear,” he said. “After seven drafts, I felt that it was ready to start storyboarding, but the film kept evolving all the way until the sound mix was done.”
When faced with his greatest fear, the cat is forced to learn to swim. Slowly, he learns to overcome his anxiety, even learning to fish for food.
But despite his perseverance and survival, another tidal wave hits, forcing him to face his fears yet again.
Gints chose a cat as the main character to save time with exposition — because people generally know cats are afraid of water.
“So I could just jump right into action,” he added. “Plus cat is a fairly small creature and the ocean seems even bigger to him.”
