Johanna by Ian Derry

A Finnish woman holds the world-record for swimming under a frozen lake. Breathtaking.

After a downhill biking accident, Johanna Nordblad thought she might lose her leg. Doctors had to leave the fracture open for 10 days to avoid necrosis. In a last ditch effort, to save the limb, they tried a painful cold-water treatment.

That experience, eventually, led her to develop a passion for swimming under frozen lakes — just holding her breath. Today, she holds the world-record for freediving 50-meters under ice wearing only a swimsuit.
